The Inter-American Institute on Disability and Inclusive Development (former Inter-American Institute on Disability-IID) was founded in Washington, DC, EUA, in January of 1999, to promote the inclusion and the autonomy of people with disabilities and their families, in the Inter-American Region. In addition to its headquarters in New York City, USA, IIDI has two regional offices: in San José of Costa Rica for Latin American and in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the South Cone.
IIDI is known internationally for its innovative approaches, as a technical organization, promoter of citizenship and social inclusion, which works through two main strategic axes: Human Rights and Inclusive Development. Among its several regional and international activities, IIDI published for five years, the Spanish version of the electronic magazine DisabilityWorld.org, scattering information on advances and activities of the area of the Disability worldwide.
IIDI is recognized by its role in knowledge generation, management and dissemination; training, capacity building and mobilization of DPOs and Civil Society; technical assistance to Governments and the Development Sector, and promotion of international, multicultural and cross-sectoral cooperation for the building of an Inclusive society.
Due to its relevant work in Human Rights - as a main articulator and disseminator of the development, ratification and implementation of the Inter-American Convention (O.A.S.), and of the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities - IIDI is recognized by its key role in the fight for inclusion and full citizenship for ALL.
During the past years, the Institute has been forging concepts, disseminating and implementing the Inclusive Development approach, working with agencies such as the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, UN Family, the Organization of the American States, governments, civil society, academia, and private sector, among others.
This approach tends to make possible the construction of actions, programs and public policies for all, instead of favoring isolated or special projects for specific sectors of the society. It is our goal thus, to recover the ample learning and the rich trajectory and social leadership from civil society and governmental organizations of people with Disability generated in the field of the human, civil and political rights, and to create new and strong alliances for the combat of poverty and the construction of truly Inclusive societies, also in the socio-economic field.
Through its electronic discussion lists in the internet, on Disability & Human Rights (both in Spanish & Portuguese), IIDI stimulates intense and productive debates, generating opportunities for exchange and subsidizing coordinated actions for the promotion of a Inclusive society in Latin America and in the world.
